In the first century a small community of Jesus believers struggled to live in ways that were faithful to the God of Israel. Discover what happened when the story of Jesus met the story of an empire that proclaimed to be the true bearer of peace. What does that mean for telling this story in our day?
Brian Walsh and Sylvia Keesmaat, authors of Colossians Remixed: Subverting the Empire present a day's teaching. If you haven't read the book or think that a bible commentary sounds a bit dull think again. It is one of the best books those of us involved in blah... have read for some time. Brian and Sylvia are based in Canada so this is a rare chance to hear and meet them.
This will follow on from the success of the 2004 blah... tour with Alan Hirsch and Michael Frost, and the 2006 blah... Emerging Churches tour with Ryan Bolger and Karen Ward.
Dr. Brian Walsh is the Christian Reformed Chaplain to the University of Toronto, where he also holds a position as an Adjunct Professor of theology. Brian is the co-author of The Transforming Vision and Truth is Stranger than it Used to Be, both with Richard Middleton, and co-author with Sylvia Keesmaat of Colossians Remixed: Subverting the Empire. His most recent book, Beyond Homelessness: Christian Faith in a Culture of Dislocation was co-authored with Steve Bouma-Prediger.
Dr. Sylvia Keesmaat completed her DPhil at Oxford, working under the supervision of NT Wright. This resulted in her first book, Paul and His Story, which looked at the use of the exodus tradition in Paul’s writings. She is an Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto, Canada, and co-author, with Brian Walsh of Colossians Remixed: Subverting the Empire. Sylvia and Brian live on an organic farm in rural Ontario.
